Duties & Responsibilities of Medical Officers and Consultants

Every Medical Officer, Consultant and Visiting Consultant shall provide safe, ethical and evidence-based medical care while complying with applicable laws, Hospital policies, NABH standards and professional regulations. Patient safety, clinical excellence and proper documentation shall remain the primary responsibility of every doctor.

Applicable Laws & Standards

  • National Medical Commission Act, 2019.
  • National Medical Commission (Professional Conduct) Regulations.
  • Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2010 (where applicable).
  • Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016.
  • NABH Care of Patients (COP) Standards.
  • NABH Human Resource Management (HRM) Standards.

Core Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, ethical and evidence-based medical care.
  • Conduct inpatient rounds at least twice daily or more frequently based on the patient's clinical condition.
  • Attend emergency calls immediately and, wherever possible, respond within 5–10 minutes.
  • Assess, diagnose and formulate appropriate treatment plans.
  • Review investigation reports promptly and modify treatment where required.
  • Coordinate with nursing staff and other departments.
  • Communicate clearly with patients and their attendants.
  • Participate in clinical meetings, mortality reviews, quality programmes and NABH activities.
  • Maintain professional behaviour and confidentiality at all times.

Emergency Responsibilities

  • Attend all emergency cases assigned by the Hospital.
  • Stabilise critically ill patients without unnecessary delay.
  • Escalate complex cases to senior consultants whenever required.
  • Ensure appropriate referrals whenever specialised care is necessary.
Doctors shall always act in the best interest of the patient while maintaining professional competence, ethical practice and compliance with Hospital policies.

CLINICAL DOCUMENTATION & PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT

Documentation, Consent, Professional Ethics & Clinical Compliance

Clinical Documentation

  • Every patient encounter shall be documented completely and accurately.
  • Diagnosis, treatment plan, medications and progress notes shall be recorded promptly.
  • Medical records shall be signed, dated and timed.
  • Corrections shall be made in accordance with Hospital Medical Record Policy.
  • No treatment shall be provided without appropriate documentation except in life-threatening emergencies, where documentation shall be completed immediately after stabilisation.

Consent

  • Valid informed consent shall be obtained before procedures, surgery or other interventions wherever legally required.
  • The treating doctor shall ensure that the patient or authorised representative understands the procedure, benefits, risks and alternatives.
  • No elective procedure shall commence without appropriate consent documentation.

Professional Conduct

  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Respect patient rights and dignity.
  • Avoid conflicts of interest.
  • Comply with Hospital SOPs and clinical protocols.
  • Maintain valid professional registration and licences.
  • Participate in mandatory training and competency assessments.

Non-Compliance

  • Failure to maintain proper documentation.
  • Failure to attend emergencies without valid reason.
  • Practising beyond approved clinical privileges.
  • Breach of confidentiality.
  • Failure to obtain informed consent.
  • Violation of Hospital policies may result in corrective or disciplinary action in accordance with applicable laws and Hospital policy.
Every doctor is responsible for delivering safe, ethical, documented and patient-centred healthcare in accordance with professional standards, Hospital policies and applicable laws.
