Emergency Care Policy
Sri Lakshmi Multi Speciality Hospital is committed to providing timely, compassionate and appropriate emergency medical care to every patient requiring urgent medical attention. Emergency care focuses on the prompt assessment, stabilisation and management of patients whose condition may threaten life, limb or vital organ function.
This Emergency Care Policy has been developed with reference to recognised Indian legal principles, professional medical ethics and healthcare quality standards, including Article 21 of the Constitution of India (Right to Life), the principles established by the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India in Parmanand Katara vs. Union of India (1989), the National Medical Commission (Registered Medical Practitioner – Professional Conduct) Regulations, 2023, the Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2010 (where applicable), the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, and the emergency care principles promoted under the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) Standards.
The Hospital is committed to providing emergency assessment, immediate stabilisation within the capabilities of the Hospital and, where clinically necessary, safe referral to an appropriate healthcare facility for specialised or advanced treatment.
Purpose of this Policy
The purpose of this policy is to establish a structured, patient-centred approach to emergency medical care that supports rapid assessment, prioritisation, stabilisation, treatment and referral where appropriate.
This policy also promotes patient safety, ethical medical practice, effective communication and continuous quality improvement while ensuring that emergency services are delivered in a fair, timely and professional manner.
Rapid Response
Prompt assessment and emergency medical intervention.
Stabilisation
Immediate measures to preserve life and prevent further deterioration.
Appropriate Care
Treatment based upon clinical assessment and medical priority.

Scope of this Policy
This policy applies to all patients presenting with emergency or potentially life-threatening medical or surgical conditions at Sri Lakshmi Multi Speciality Hospital, regardless of age, gender, nationality, background or financial status, subject to the Hospital's available facilities and clinical capabilities.
The policy applies to all doctors, nurses, emergency department personnel, ambulance staff, allied healthcare professionals and administrative employees involved in the assessment, treatment, stabilisation, documentation, communication and referral of emergency patients.
"Emergency medical care begins with rapid assessment, timely clinical decision-making and compassionate patient care."
Our Commitment to Emergency Care
Sri Lakshmi Multi Speciality Hospital is committed to providing prompt emergency assessment and immediate stabilisation within the capabilities of the Hospital. Our emergency response prioritises clinical urgency and patient safety while maintaining dignity, compassion and respect for every patient.
Our Emergency Care Promise
We are committed to delivering emergency medical care with urgency, professionalism and compassion. Emergency assessment and stabilisation are provided in accordance with recognised medical practice, applicable Indian legal principles and ethical responsibilities, while continually strengthening our emergency services in support of future NABH accreditation.
Immediate Medical Stabilisation
Sri Lakshmi Multi Speciality Hospital is committed to providing immediate clinical assessment and emergency stabilisation for patients presenting with life-threatening or serious medical conditions, within the capabilities of the Hospital.
Initial emergency treatment focuses on preserving life, protecting vital organ function, preventing deterioration and relieving severe pain or distress until definitive treatment or referral can be arranged where necessary.
Immediate Priorities
- Rapid clinical assessment.
- Airway, breathing and circulation management.
- Control of severe bleeding where applicable.
- Pain relief and emergency interventions.
- Continuous patient monitoring.
Emergency Commitment
Emergency stabilisation is initiated without avoidable delay, based upon clinical urgency, available facilities and the professional judgement of the treating medical team.
Emergency Care Process
Emergency care follows a structured clinical pathway to ensure that patients receive timely assessment, stabilisation, investigation and treatment according to the severity of their condition.
Emergency Care Workflow
- Patient arrival and registration (where clinically appropriate).
- Rapid emergency assessment.
- Triage and clinical prioritisation.
- Immediate stabilisation.
- Emergency investigations and diagnostic support.
- Definitive treatment based on clinical findings.
- Admission, surgery, intensive care or observation where required.
- Safe referral to another healthcare facility if specialised care is required.
"Every emergency patient is assessed according to clinical urgency to ensure timely and appropriate medical care."
Triage & Clinical Prioritisation
Emergency patients are prioritised according to the seriousness of their medical condition rather than the order in which they arrive. Triage enables the Hospital to allocate medical resources efficiently while ensuring that critically ill patients receive immediate attention.
Clinical prioritisation is performed by appropriately trained healthcare professionals using recognised triage principles and the patient's presenting condition.
Emergency Consent & Communication
Wherever reasonably practicable, informed consent will be obtained before treatment in accordance with applicable legal and ethical requirements. However, in genuine life-threatening emergencies where delay may place the patient's life or health at serious risk and consent cannot reasonably be obtained, emergency treatment may be provided in accordance with accepted medical practice and applicable Indian law.
The Hospital will make reasonable efforts to communicate with the patient's family members or authorised representatives regarding the patient's condition, treatment plan, clinical progress and referral decisions, whenever circumstances permit.
Family Communication
Clear, compassionate and timely communication is an important part of emergency care. The treating team will endeavour to keep patients or their authorised representatives informed throughout the emergency treatment process, subject to clinical priorities and patient confidentiality.
Referral to Higher Centre
While Sri Lakshmi Multi Speciality Hospital is committed to providing emergency assessment and immediate stabilisation within its available clinical capabilities, certain patients may require specialised investigations, super-speciality treatment or advanced critical care that is beyond the scope of services available at the Hospital.
Where such circumstances arise, the treating medical team shall arrange an appropriate referral after stabilising the patient to the extent reasonably possible. The receiving healthcare facility shall be informed wherever practicable, and relevant clinical information shall accompany the patient to support continuity of care.
Referral May Be Required For
- Super-speciality treatment.
- Advanced intensive care.
- Complex trauma management.
- Specialised surgical procedures.
- Advanced diagnostic services.
- Other services beyond Hospital capability.
Safe Continuity of Care
Referrals are coordinated to promote patient safety, minimise delays and ensure continuity of medical care during transfer.
Ambulance & Safe Patient Transfer
When referral is clinically indicated, Sri Lakshmi Multi Speciality Hospital shall make reasonable efforts to facilitate safe patient transfer using an appropriately equipped ambulance and qualified healthcare personnel, depending upon the patient's clinical condition and operational availability.
During transfer, essential medical records, investigation reports, referral notes and details of treatment already provided shall accompany the patient to support continuity of care at the receiving healthcare facility.
"Safe transfer includes appropriate communication, stabilisation, documentation and coordination between the referring and receiving healthcare teams."
Emergency Documentation & Medico-Legal Cases
Accurate and timely documentation forms an essential part of emergency medical care. Clinical findings, emergency treatment, investigations, consent (where applicable), referrals and patient outcomes shall be recorded in accordance with accepted professional practice and applicable legal requirements.
Where a patient is involved in a suspected Medico-Legal Case (MLC), the Hospital shall follow applicable legal requirements regarding documentation, preservation of relevant evidence and notification to the appropriate law enforcement authority, while ensuring that emergency medical treatment is not unnecessarily delayed.
Documentation Standards
Emergency records shall be maintained accurately, securely and confidentially to support continuity of care, legal compliance, clinical governance and quality improvement.

Sri Lakshmi Multi Speciality Hospital maintains emergency preparedness systems to support safe and effective emergency care. Infection prevention measures, emergency response protocols and patient safety practices are integrated into emergency services to reduce clinical risks and improve patient outcomes.
